This is Not a Selfie
March 28, 2017
ArtCenter College of Design
On an exceptionally sunny day in the last week of March, Education in LA hosted a special viewing of This is Not a selfie exhibited in the Alyce de Roulet Gallery, ArtCenter College of Design. The touring show organized by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) comprises 65 photographers exploring and expanding the definition of self-portrait. Part of an outstanding collection created by Audrey and Sydney Irmas, together with their daughter Deborah Irmas, the works range from early 19th – century experiments through contemporary digital techniques, including works by Diane Arbus, Robert Mapplethorpe, Catherine Opie, Cindy Sherman, Alfred Stieglitz, Lorna Simpson, and Andy Warhol. We were most fortunate to have Deborah Irmas, introduced by Sigrid Burton, as our personal guide through the exhibit. Her intimate knowledge of each work, laced with engaging stories of her family’s acquisition process, brought an added special dimension to our tour. This is Not a Selfie exhibit is supported by a PAA grant and gracious appreciation was given by Stephen Nowlin, Director of the Alyce de Roulet Gallery.
