March General Meeting – Long Beach Museum of Art

It was a beautiful day in Long Beach where PAA members enjoyed the exhibits and grounds of the Long Beach Museum of Art. Judy Penner opened the meeting and introduced one of our new members, Sarah Deschenes.
Patty Zuber reported on our current treasury accounts, noting that it was necessary for PAA to purchase a new computer for the office.
Laura O’Connor introduced Ron Nelson, Executive Director of the Long Beach Museum of Art who spoke of the 70 year history of the museum, its current exhibits and plans for the future. The museum has a collection of over 4,500 pieces, including recent acquisitions from the Downey Museum of Art. The current exhibit includes “Seven Decades of Women’s Art.” We were all particularly intrigued by the installation, “Buddy Buddy,” funded by PAA. This remarkable work by Patrick Dougherty is made of harvested willow molded into five giant sculptures. It is living, growing phenomenom that should last for several years.
Following our tour of the exhibits, we enjoyed a delicious lunch prepared by Clare’s restaurant on the grounds of the museum overlooking the sparkling Pacific Ocean.
