December 2024 General Meeting – ICA LA
The General Meeting was held at the institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (ICA LA) In the Arts District. Lunch followed at the Bicycle Shop.
We were treated to a docent-led tour of the current exhibition entitled Scientia Sexualis which is an ambitious survey featuring an international and interdisciplinary group of 27 contemporary artists whose works confront and reclaim difficult histories of sexual science. Organizers Jennifer Doyle & Jeanne Vaccaro are two leading scholars in the fields of feminist and trans studies. The exhibition takes place as part of Pacific Standard Time, the city-wide initiative led by the Getty Foundation.
This survey of artists’ works confront and re-imagine sex and gender and reconfigure the relationship between art and science and create an alternative access point to the history of science where, sex, gender, and pleasure are concerned. The exhibition addresses the aftermath of our encounters with scientific discourses and institutions and features contradictory energies that circulate through the lab and the clinic, the library and the archive, exploring and re-constructing frameworks that tell us not only what sex and gender are, but what a body is and can be.
The show consists of paintings, sculptures, a couch, and peek-a-boo tiny showcases of erotica. There is much to consider.
